Sarah Miriam Peale was the daughter of artist James Peale and niece of Charles Willson Peale. In 1824, Sarah and her sister Anna were the first women accepted to the Pennsylvania Academy of Art in Philadelphia. With more than 100 commissioned portraits, Sarah is considered America’s first female professional painter and the most prolific painter in Baltimore during the mid 19th century.
